Two-way SMS - OpenPhone

What is group texting?

Group texting is the ability to send texts to multiple people at once. Sending a group text is particularly useful to businesses that want to have group conversations with customers. For example, you can coordinate meeting times, send appointment or meeting reminders, or share post-call action items and follow-up tasks.

Group texting is different from bulk texting or mass texting because participants in a group text can send and receive texts with two-way SMS. With bulk and mass texting, recipients of the bulk text can’t reply or communicate with other recipients in a shared thread.

How group texting works in OpenPhone

Sending a group text is simple with OpenPhone. Simply add multiple contacts to receive your message, compose your SMS or MMS message, and hit Send. OpenPhone supports up to 10 contacts in a group text, including yourself.

It’s important to keep in mind that before sending group texts, you’ll have to file for A2P 10DLC registration to message US phone numbers due to emerging regulations pushed for by large US cell carriers. Any business sending messages to US numbers through a cloud-based phone provider must complete this additional verification step.

Send group texts in four simple steps

Send a group text in OpenPhone in only four steps:

A phone call is displayed on a screen.A conversation between two people on a messaging app.

Four practical use cases for group texting

Want to know how you can use group texting? Here are four use cases to help you get started:

1. Share meeting availability

Need to coordinate meeting times with multiple people?. Group texting makes it easy to compare schedules with a group of people and find the right time on everyone’s calendar.

2. Send meeting reminders

Send a group text message to your sales prospects to confirm an upcoming meeting. Easily send a reminder text on the day of the meeting to confirm the agenda and make sure everyone is attending. Plus, easily coordinate scheduling changes if someone has to drop out at the last minute.

3. Send post-call summaries and action items

Group texts aren’t just useful before a group call. They can continue the conversation after your call has ended.

Share call recordings and post-call summaries and transcripts with your call’s participants.. Users on OpenPhone’s Business plan can use an AI-generated call summary and automatic call recording to quickly recap a call and share it with the entire group.

OpenPhone’s call summaries also provide a helpful round-up of action items so no task can slip through the cracks.

4. Collect customer questions and feedback

Group texting is a more approachable and informal way of communicating, which makes it a great channel for gathering feedback from your customers.

Use a group text to check in with your customer’s stakeholders to collect feedback. Plus, customers can easily send you their questions over a group text before your next meeting.
