What is shared calling?

Shared calling enables teams to make and receive calls from a single phone number at the same time. Powered by Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), shared calling is a common feature of virtual phone software because virtual numbers aren’t tied to a physical device or single location.

With shared calling, incoming calls reach a number and dial all available team members. If someone is currently on a call using that number, other team members can still answer inbound calls or make outbound calls from the number.

Shared calling is enabled in OpenPhone when you share your number with a team member. Invite your teammates to your OpenPhone workspace and start using shared numbers.

When you receive an incoming call, OpenPhone rings all available team members with access to that number. OpenPhone will stop ringing once someone answers the call so other team members know the caller has been helped.

The line is never busy, even if a team member is on a call. Other team members can still make and receive calls from that number.

How many users on my team can have access to a shared number in OpenPhone?

Up to 10 users on your team can access your shared number with OpenPhone’s Starter plan.

If you upgrade to the Business plan, you can add an unlimited number of users to your shared number, and a maximum of 100 users can call and text from your shared number at the same time.

If I only want managerial access to a number, can I silence call notifications?

Yes, you can mute call and text notifications for specific numbers in OpenPhone. 

To mute OpenPhone numbers in the web or desktop app:

  1. Go to the web app or launch the desktop app.
  2. On the left-hand menu, locate the phone numbers assigned to you.
  3. Hover over the phone number that you'd like to mute. Then click ... .
  4. Select 🌙 Mute.
  5. From here, choose how long you'd like the number to be muted for.

To mute OpenPhone numbers in the mobile app:

  1. Select your account icon in the upper left-hand corner.
  2. Click Manage next to Your numbers.
  3. Tap Off next to Mute phone number.
  4. Select how long you'd like the number to be muted.
